JOHN W. BEATTY, M.A.,
DIRECTOR OF FINE ARTS

November 12, 1918

Mr. Charles L. Freer,
33 Ferry Avenue, East,
Detroit, Michigan.

Dear Mr. Freer:

Mr. George L. Herdle, Director of the Memorial Art Gallery of Rochester, N.Y. has shipped to you two water colours by Winslow Homer, which you were good enough to lend to the Museum Directors' Association for the circuit exhibition. These paintings, Mr. Herdle notifies me, were returned to you, by express, prepaid. He has not, however, received a receipt from you, showing that they have arrived. As manager of the circuit exhibition, I am naturally anxious to close up the details, especially, those involving claim for damages to frames or paintings. Fortunately, so far, we have not been compelled to present claims, but I am desirous of protecting the owners of paintings, which were so generously loaned to us, and I am [[strikethrough]] sending under separate cover [[strikethrough]] enclosing receipt forms, so I may be assured of their safe arrival.

The exhibition was one of the art events of the year. The very best works by Homer and Sargent were shown, and thanks to your fine spirit of cooperation, the circuit exhibition was both an educational and aesthetic success. I beg to remain

Gratefully yours,
Rob B. Harshe
Secretary, Museum Directors' Ass'n

Mr. Balken wishes especially to be remembered to you.
