Dear Sir:----

You may recall at the time of our last interview I spoke with you concerning an oil painting, by Whistler, in which a portrait of himself appears; that I said to you that in the event of a decision on my part not to buy the picture I would let you know about it. The painting is entitled "WHISTLER IN HIS STUDIO" and I think is still owned by Mr. Douglas Freshfield of London, the eminent geographer. On several occasions different dealers have intimated a right to dispose of the picture, and one or two firm offers have been made me - the latest came by letter from Messrs. Ernest Brown & Phillips. Leicester Galleries, Leicester Square, London under date of May 28th. They state that the picture has been placed in their hands for sale. The price asked is twenty-five hundred pounds. I have replied stating that the price is too high for my consideration. And in accordance with my promise I now give you these particulars which I hope may be of some use to you. 

As I shall not buy the picture please feel that so far as I am concerned the market is open to you; and while I have no particular reasons to ask you to refrain from mentioning my name in the matter, I trust you will treat the price and the source from
