Darjeeling, March 15/95.

Dear Mr. Hecker,

My last letter to you written at Bankipore, like several others, was scratched off most hurriedly in a Railway Station. Travelling in this blessed country is none too luxurious at best, and in some places the only contents of one's room consist of what he caries with him, one chair, and excuse for a cat and an apology for a table. Here however, there is an excellent hotel and scenery of great beauty. Fifty miles into the Himalayan mountains surrounded by the highest peaks in the world, and at times, apparently afloat in the clouds. If I had come here directly from the ship I would have been bowled over by this marvellous scenery but one gradually grows used to wonders in this country where one can hardly turn round without having one's hat lifted by a half dozen or more marvels.
