Carlton Hotel,
Pall Mall, London.
July 28th 1899.

Dear Colonel-

Yours of the 12th came duly and I was glad to receive it - you know one is always happy to receive assurance of the good health of his friends. Poor Alger! How and his retirement from office! The abuse and stinging remarks and references echoed in the English press I imagine, only slightly compare with what has appeared in the American newspapers. I am very sorry for him!

We are not doing very much in London - the "season" is nearly over and will practically end tomorrow.

See Barr frequently and his friends here who seem numerous and interesting including Anthony Hope, Conan Doyle, et al.

He (Barr) speaks often of you and very kindly.

Whistler is a French watering place, near Dieppe, and under the care of a physician - just recovery from influenza. I doubt very much if he will be in London during my stay.

He had sent to me from his studio here to my hotel, one of the paintings bought in 1894 and I fancy the other one is still unfinished. The unfinished one is the most important but I shall probably have to wait still longer for it. I dont mind the waiting so much if I were only sure that in the event of Whistler's unlooked for death, nothing would occur to the picture contrary to my interest[[strikethrough]]s[[strikethrough]].

There are plenty of Americans in London now including a few Detroiters - Will Warren, Gilbert McMillan, Frank Walker, and young Wetmore.
