Dear Thayer:-

You have doubtless received a copy of the Prospectus for an exhibition of contemporary American oil during February and March next.

I enclose herewith for your perusal copies of letters dated October sixteenth and seventeenth written to me by Mr. McGuire, the director. You will observe that along with the work of Dewing and Tryon he wishes me to loan your picture of "The Virgin". How do you feel about having it sent? The conditions under which the prizes are to be awarded are ridiculous, but it is too later to change them. Naturally, because of the exhibition being held in Washington during a session of Congress, I am interested in the matter; that is, I think that because of the legislation concerning art and the National Museum, a thoroughly representative exhibition of American art would not only delight Washingtonians,
