were loose and the dish turned downward. Upon opening it here, we found two pieces broken from the rim. From the bronze koro, numbered 10, one of the two birds was broken off at the rim. The wooden carving, numbered 6, was snapped off at the stem. 
The consular invoice showed item numbered 17, in case numbered 498, as compromising, among other articles, ten pottery bowls. Only five of these bowls, (in one package), were in the case, when it was received here. 
I wrote you to see that the contents of the cases were carefully handled by the customs people, and I would be pleased to have you cause an investigation to be made into the matter of the breakages of the three articles named; also the shortage of the five bowls, and to hear from you at your earliest convenience.
