Dear Sir:-

Your letter of November 27th came this morning; and I hasten to reply.

It is a real regret to refuse - especially an Artist, the right to photograph the "Little Lady Sophie Of. Soho." When the picture first came into my possession, I attempted to get good photographs of it; and with this end in view, employed the best Photographers I could find - both in New York and Detroit; but the results were fearfully disappointing. I afterwards, allowed Mr. Henry Wolf, the famous Wood Engraver, to re-produce the picture. His re-production is quite satisfactory, and gives considerable of that subtle mystery of the original, which the camera absolutely misses.

With this explanation, you will - I know, excuse me from granting your request, being an Artist yourself you will realize the importance of preventing the mis-conception of the Master-piece being allowed to exist.

Yours very truly,
Charles L Freer
