Secretary and Manager, The Pennsylvania
Academy of the Fine Arts,
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dear Sir:-

The three paintings by Mr. Dewing which you had on exhibition The Ten, were received at Mr. Freer's residence the day before yesterday afternoon and I rggret to say that the packing of these paintings was most carelessly done. The paintings were received in a not-at-all good condition: "Portrait of a Lady at a Harpsichord" came in a box other than the one in which it was sent from here, which was made especially for it. It was carelessly put in the box and the result is that the frame, which is a new one, and only recently placed upon it, is considerably damaged. The caretaker of Mr. Freer's pictures tells me that he has never seen a worst packing job in his experience. The frame of "The Mirror" is also somewhat damaged, but this may have come from handling at the Exhibition and not from packing or transportation. "Mandolin", which is a small picture, was returned all right.

Yours truly,
JM Kennedy
