My Dear Mr. Freer:

Returning to my desk after a pleasant stay in Florida, I find a copy of Mr. Bartlett's letter to you dated February 24th and desire to add a word or two with reference to the second paragraph of that letter.

Out of a desire to obey implicitly the instructions you left with us to prepay the charges through to Paris on the shipment of Ether, our New York Office labored with the Steamship Company to obtain definite assurance that the freight paid would carry the shipment through to Paris, but all the satisfaction they could obtain was that in all likelihood it would. This intimation we now think was based on the supposition that in view of the nature of the shipment and the beneficent work being done by the American Hospital of Paris in the French cause the railroad would carry it free from Havre to Paris. This apparently was not done; hence the claim for Frs. 48.10 freight made upon us by the Steamship Company, equal to $9.29, which Mr. Bartlett during my absence ordered charged to your account.

Now if this procedure is not entirely satisfactory to you we will cheerfully stand the freight ourselves.

You will be pleased to learn that Mr. Ryan's general health never was better and that he is accepting his confinement in the most philosophical manner, attending to correspondence and other business in his room to relieve the monotony.
