My dear Mr. Canfield:-

It is a real pleasure to have your good letter of December 29th, which reached here during my recent visit to New York.

I am much interested in all that you have written and am steadily wishing for the success of your plans; if the matter ends as you hope it will, you will surely be a very busy man during the coming years, and a Croesus as well.

Now, I want you to heap up the dollars as rapidly and as high as you care to have them, but don't let the accumulation of gold interfere with the pleasures of life.  Mexico, must be a ve3ry interesting city, and I should think that as a pastime and relief from business cares, you may find it possible to secure some of the extraordinary antiquities of Southern Mexico and Central America.  There are no Whistlers down there, but I don't believe you will find it possible to stay in Mexico very long without some aesthetic enjoyment, so, why not devote a part of your time to Mexican and Central American antiquities?
