I only learned of the late General Griffin's request for Mr Allen's relief a day or two since. Today Mr Allen writes as below:
"You doubtless noticed the death of General Griffin. This leaves General J. J. Reynolds in command of Texas. General Reynolds gave us valuable aid in Arkansas and will give all aid and sympathy desired should we continue in Texas. I am personally acquainted with him and know he will be all right. I think you can represent this to General Howard and resume your work with perfect confidence. I make these statements and you can take such action as you deem proper"

Mr. Allen has been four years in my employ. I know him to be one of the most valuable, self-denying christian workers sent into the South. He was two years in Arkansas, and was there while General Reynolds was in command. Since the whole
