United States Senate,
WASHINGTON, D.C.

Detroit, October 29, 1903.

My dear Colonel Mills:-

Referring again to the Memorial Tablet to James McNeill Whistler, which you have kindly consented shall be erected upon the wall of the Chapel at West Point, I beg to tell you that Mr. Augustus Saint Gaudens came to Detroit yesterday to consult with Mr. Freer about the subject, and a question occurred to their minds as to the permanency of the present chapel. Is it likely that it will be disturbed when the contemplated improvements are carried out, and is it likely that a new chapel will then be erected?

Any information you can give me on this subject will be greatly appreciated. Messrs. Saint Gaudens and Freer hope to call upon you at West Point 'ere long.

With all good wishes, I remain,

Very sincerely yours,
(signed) R. A. Alger
