My dear Freer,

First: the compliments of the Season to you, and of life in general as far as you have gotten! I hope your Italy tour was delightful, and that you are much refreshed. I wish you ever stopped over here! But why should you have time in this rush of life.!

I write now for another purpose. I wonder if you know anything of the charm of sea birds on our coast. The milliners are making another onslaught through the gunners they hire to shoot them, and several kinds of Tern already nearly exterminated from the Atlantic coast are in especial demand and will come very near complete eradication this coming Spring. All this is against the laws of most of the coast States and the laws are perfectly workable if the offenders be caught 'red handed' which it is perfectly possible to do by hiring keepers for the breeding places. I am giving $50 and Wm Brewster the same and I am telling the ornithologists that I believe every one of them has some rich friend
