and credulity when it can be returned to their advantage. Their feeling towards them is as forcibly expressed in language having a perfect contempt & hate for them they call Niggers or d-m niggers & are always cursing them or threatening to shoot them. Were it not for the dread they entertain for the "Bureau" their lives much less their property orders would be of little consideration

In relation to education, there is a great thirst for knowledge. The Freed people are anxious to have their children educated but receive very little encouragement or assistance from the Whites. During the past year there was only two schools (private) in the County. Some of the Planters are now agitating the question, & contemplate having permanent schools established upon thier places  It was held out as an inducement by some in order to secure hands for the present year, & worked splendidly. It was a great desideration & was grasped at eagerly, showing a very earnest regard for their childrens culture  The Freed people are very desirous that a public school should be opened here, & if a suitable teacher could be procured, at a fair salary, a building could very easily be procured  The White people evince but little interest in the matter so that if a school is started here it will be through the Agency of the "Bureau".
