I can assure you Lieut that if the protection of the "Bureau" was withdrawn their chances for getting the little they earn would be worthless for the Whites esteem if no crime or disgrace to rob & swindle them out of every cent they can

(In regard to Education there has been some little stir made though but little really done.  Mr "Dennis" has a flourishing school upon his place.  Those other Planters contiguous to each other are erecting a school building which will soon be completed & in operation Parents are very anxious to have their children educated & their children display a remarkable thirst for knowledge)

I have a Detachment of five US. Soldiers with me I do not think an officer can properly discharge his duties & execute orders without them
