HOTEL THIEVES VERY ACTIVE

TWO EPWORTH LEAGUERS AND TWO OTHERS TOUCHED FOR CASH LAST NIGHT.

Three Robberies at the Wayne and One at the Ste. Claire—One Man Lost $155.

Hotel thieves are again active in Detroit. An Epworth League delegate, Rev. Stephen Jay, of Forti-fort[Forty Fort], Penn., reported to the police this morning that he had lost $60 last night. He and a friend roomed at the Hotel Ste. Claire. His friend arose early this morning and left the door open when he went out. It is supposed that the thief took advantage of this fact and entered the room. The money was pinned in the watch pocket of Mr. Jay's trousers.

Thieves were much more active at the Wayne hotel, where one Epworth League delegate and tow other guests were robbed. R. C. Ulrich, of Mt. Clemens, who slept on a cot in one of the corridors, was relieved of a gold watch and a sealskin pocketbook containing $17. James Stander, delegate to the Epworth League from Louisville, Neb., forgot to lock the door of his room, and this morning discovered that $155 had been stolen from his clothes, and Miss Jeanette Kyle, of Milroy, Penn., has $27 stolen.

Marine.

MUST BE U.S. CITIZENS.

Effort to Enforce Rule Relative to Captains on American Boats.

At yesterday's session of the International Longshoremen's convention at Bay City, the M.E.B.A. question caused a lengthy discussion of a resolution making it optional with the marine engineer's locals to join the organization. The members present at the convention will make an effort to force all captains of vessels plying at the great lakes under the American flag to be citizens of the United States, which law has been violated so often that little attention is paid to the fact. It is said that many Canadian captains sail American vessels and the when the season closes they return to Canada. By a resolution introduced yesterday afternoon, President Keefe's salary was raised from $1,800 to $2,500 and Secretary-Treasurer Barter had his raised from $1,500 to $2,250.

Lake Michigan Steamers May Race.

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich., July 18.—The new steamer Eastland, of the Michigan Steamship Co., arrived this morning with 250 guests aboard. She made the run from Manistee, going, it is claimed, 21 miles an hour at times. She is being inspected by South Haven people today. She goes from here to Chicago, returning at the same time as the City of South Haven. A race is looked for. The Eastland will be the first steamer leaving this port with saloon aboard.

Lake Freights.

CHICAGO, July 18.—It was as dull as ever in grain, and vesselmen were steadily sending their boats out light for iron ore. Rates were 1 1/8 cents, with no sign of improvement.
