Ansd Sept 17

Shanghai, 25th July, 1917.

Charles L. Freer, Esq.,
Detroit, Michigan.

Dear Sir,

We received your telegram offering six thousand American gold dollars for the Jadestone Sword, and after much discussion among ourselves we have agreed to accept your offer; but as the price of gold is very low at the present time and is daily falling lower we cannot but suffer some loss, and we should be grateful if, after taking this into consideration, you could add a little to the price offered. We leave this request, however, entirely for you to grant or refuse.

Besides the Jadestone Sword, we have purchased 40 or 50 ancient jade relics from some old collectors, including fine specimens of the Three Dynasties of Antiquity (Haia, Shang and Chow Dynasties) as well as of the Han Dynasty, and they are specimens such as are seldom offered for sale in China and they would be very difficult-perhaps impossible-to meet with again. We have also bought many specimens of Sung porcelains, and about a dozen Sung paintings which are very rarely seen and are obtainable only by means of long and careful investigations. Knowing your great skill and experience
