"Give a statement of the official business transacted during the month; its nature and your method of disposing of the same. State your office hours; the number of days absent from office, if any, and reason for the same."

Visiting plantations and encouraging labor. Office hours from 9 A.M. till 5 P.M. and at all other hours when necessary. Absent three days on trip to Mount Pleasant to make settlement with the Post Quartermaster for forage

"State the number of Troops at your Post and the necessity for the same; whether or not the freed people would be secure if they were removed; in other words will the civil authorities protect them and give them justice, &c. &c."

No troops at this station; myself and the freed people very unsafe. The Civil Authorities are afraid to take bold steps in rendering justice to the freed people. The freed people prefer to suffer gross wrongs and abuse rather than run the risk of their lives in seeking redress at the hands of Civil Authorities. The people are defiant and pistol shots are heard at all hours.
