First of The Race Begin Work At Tuskegee

TUSKEGEE-(ANP)-Maj. DeHaven Hinkson, post surgeon, air corps advanced flying school, Tuskegee, reports the arrival of five Negro nurses assigned to the medical staff of the post medical unit. 30 March 1942

The new arrivals are 1st Lt. Della H. Raney, chief nurse, 2nd Lt. Mary Petty. Chicago, 2nd Lt. Ruth Speight, Wilson, N. C., and Lt. Kathryn Bough, Portsmouth, Va., and 2nd Lt. Gertrude L. Scott, Philadelphia. All were transferred from Fort Bragg, N. C.

FORMER NORFOLK NURSE
Lt. Raney has the distinction of several "firsts." She was the first Negro nurse to report for duty in the new army for World War No. 11; she is the first Negro nurse to be appointed chief nurse, and the first to be promoted to 1st lieutenant. As a matter of fact she is the only one holding the last two titles. Lt. Raney, whose home is Suffolk, Va., received her nurse training at Lincoln Hospital Training school, Durham, N. C. After graduation she served successively on the staff of the Community Hospital, Norfolk, Va., and K. B. Reynolds hospital, Winston-Salem, N. C.

Later Miss Raney went back to Lincoln hospital, Durham, as operation supervisor. She left Lincoln April, 1941, to receive her commission as 2nd lieutenant and to report to duty at Fort Bragg, N. C. She was promoted to 1st lieutenant on March 1, this year, less than 12 months after her entry into the service- a signal tribute to her ability and work.

ST. AGNES GRADUATE
2nd Lt. Mary Petty is a graduate of Freedmans in Washington. D. C., and has served on the staff of Seaview, L. I., and Dixie hospital, Hampton.

2nd Lt. Ruth Speight is a graduate of St. Agnes, Raleigh, N. C. She has worked at St. Agnes hospital and at Tampa Negro hospital, Tampa, Fla.

2nd Lt. Kathryn Bough was graduated from Lincoln Hospital, N. Y. Before being assigned to Fort Bragg in September, 1941, Miss Bough was on the staff at Meharry Medical college, Nashville, Harlem hospital, New York, and Whitaker hospital, Newport News, Va.

2nd Lt. Gertrude L. Scott finished nurse training at Mercy hospital, Philadelphia. Before going to Fort Bragg on October 1, 1941, she was on the staff of Henry Phipps institute.
