and after having somewhat recovered my health, I again evaded service, by contracting with the Government to build a Hospital at Camp Winder,  furthermore I was compelled to do something for the Government, rather than remain in the Hospital, where I was sent after being conscripted, by Contracting I was released; After my Contract was partly complied with, I called upon the Sec'y of War Mr James A. Sedden and endeavored to have the Contract annulled but without success. I was then appointed Commissary for the "Ambulance Committee" which was a benevolent institution for the Care of the Sick and wounded of both sides. I have the satisfaction of knowing I have done much good for the Union soldiers by carrying many Car Loads of Clothing to them at Danville and Salisbury; I was also at Savannah & Charleston exchanging Prisoners and issuing to them Provisions [[strikethrough]] the Clothing sent from the North [[/strikethrough]]. I have never received one cent
