the Civil authorities, as nothing would afford me greater pleasure than to see fair and impartial trials, where the Freedman is an interested party.  I have labored zealously for this, and have rendered every assistance to the Civil authorities that I could consistently with my duties: my labors have been not to alienate the feelings of the whites and blacks, but if possible have them united in one common interest, but it appears without avail.  An apology is no doubt due for the great length of this report but it appeared impossible to present it in a briefer form.
