I have the honor to forward the following in regard to the statement of Mr Joseph P. Caldwell of Aylett, Kg Wm Co., Va.

Mr Caldwell had in his possession some patterns which Mr Walker thought belonged to him He (Mr W)went after them met Mr C. as friends. They had some words about the patterns during which Mr C. called Mr W. a liar upon which Mr W. struck him when a fight ensued. But during the disturbance no mention was made about Mr C. being a loyal man & a refugee though he did call Mr W. a rebel.

Mr B. B. Douglass counsel for Mr C. informs me that if he thought any other jury would have granted more damages he should have applied to have the verdict set aside and a new trial granted but as that has been the verdict granted in such cases for the last twenty years in this county he had to be satisfied with it.

Mr Caldwell was not present at court during the trial.
