Rations to a large amount are issued from this office, of which there is a proper record, showing reason why issue is made in each case, and all facts and data material to a wise and businesslike distribution of public food.  The destitutes drawing rations are carefully and personally [[strikethrough]] inspected [[/strikethrough]] examined, visited at their homes, and every case of imposition or insufficient need is thus liable to detection.  Since the first of March last 411 persons have been dropped from the ration list, and 286 of them within the past month alone.

It is hoped, at no sacrifice of justice, or of humanity, to reduce the list to less than a thousand, or to one half what it was on the first of March: this is, and will be due to the most unremitting and faithful labors of Lieut Reed and his capable assistants.

Many destitutes belonging to other counties have still to be fed, because they are women, helpless with infants, either in their arms or unborn, with no place to go to in their own counties, totally destitute, utterly helpless who would be beggars anywhere.  Many, for instance, are from New Kent: govt. can only transport them to within thirty miles of their old home, but, should they get there, there are no houses for them, they have no money to
