I have the honor to call your attention to extracts from the True Southerner, Hampton Va. in which the Editor and Mr. Baker attack me in my official position, and persists in endeavoring to make the public believe that in Surry Co., in my Dist., negroes are being sold at public auction

Agreeable to your order of 13th Jan. the matter was investigated thoroughly by a competent person, and the result of that investigation contradicted the reports, which same was made official and forwarded through your Head Qrs to them. Since their second attack a new officer has been sent to Surry Co. to investigate affairs, and he positively asserts that no order was issued by any-one connected with the Bureau, that the Freedmen not securing homes would
