for the peace and quietude of the town, that such troublesome characters should leave it the freedmen flocking to me for protection from the ruffians conduct, the town being left without any civil officer, the citizens seeking me for advice with all these circumstances. I could not act otherwise, than I did, and if I exceeded my authority, I will shoulder the responsibility willingly.

I personally arrested six but only two having been identified, I released the balance and now have two, who will be tried today.

The entire damage done is as follows. one bridge builder (white), severely stabbed, two freedman and one freedwoman beaten, not badly, two freedmens houses broken open. I have every reason to believe that we'll have no further trouble here but troops is always necessary at this post.

Very respectfully
