"Private"

Gordonsville May 17, 1866

Genl Brown

I have made inquiry into the state of affairs of Charlottesville during the time Generals Fullerton & Steadman were there.

I do not learn that the Asst Supt was intoxicated then. He may have been. He
has however, since that time been on a spree.

I would like to give him a longer trial. I
do not think he will again offend in this way.
He is a capable officer. I know of nothing
prejudicial to him except what I have written

I send this private report of the case for your information so that if you desire to take any
action in the case you may do so with a knowledge of the facts. But I would recommend leniency in this case, believing it will be appreciated and that Lieut Joyes will not [[strikethrough]] need [[/strikethrough]] merit report hereafter

T. Frank P Crandon
