Mrs S.E. Burton.
On the 16th of April the colored people had a celebration and procession. I stood in my door looking toward the stand erected for speakers. Saw a pistol fired by somebody on the ground, there was a great rush in that direction by the crowd at the stand. Heard five or six pistol shots. Did not know until night that any one was killed. The shooting was 20 yds. from my house, and the stand 200 yds.

Afterwards saw from the window Whitehurst
