General:

I have the honor to lay before you the following case:

Asbury Gillam (cold) a drayman, was murdered by a man supposed to be one Wm Marshall (white) on the 9th of August. He was enticed from Petersburg by Marshall under the pretense of employing him to go into Chesterfield Co. to bring a load of oats to this city. When about three miles from Petersburg, Asbury was killed, and his mules and dray taken by the murderer to within three miles of Richmond where the body of the dray was left.

The County authorities of Chesterfield Co. furnished $25 00 to pay for the expenses of apprehending the murderer; the widow of the murdered man has advanced $72 00 to pay such expenses. The officers of the law pursued the murderer as far as Bristol Va; but the funds furnished being exhausted, the
