At that interview, I gave Mr. Cofer clearly to understand, that the civil authorities had full jurisdiction in the matter; and that he could obtain justice in the courts. Before leaving my office, he requested of me the name and address of the Commanding Officer at Richmond, Va. which I gave him (and not as stated by him) that I referred him to Maj. Genl. Schofield for information and a decision.
In regard to Mr. Cofer, I have been informed by Persons living in the vicinity of his Residence, that he only assume the vocation of a Minister, to keep out of the Confederate Service; and procured a license to preach for that purpose - on the surrender and disbandment of the Army, he left the Ministry to engage again in secular labor.
Enclosed you will please find Mr Taylor's statement, which I requested of him might be furnished in writing- and to the correctness of which, he is willing if necessary to make affidavit: and several Gentlemen of Christiansburg are ready if required to make oath to the facts therein contained. The offences charged against him, alluded to by Mr Taylor (which if proven, would render him liable to Capital punishment)
