EB. 35th Vol 1, 1866

Office Com. Musters.
Dept. of Va.
Richmond April 3rd 1866.

Respectfully returned. If the 2nd U.S. Colored Cavalry, is the regiment referred to in the within Communication - the following statement, in regard to that organization is correct. On the arrival of the regiment at City Point there were exactly three (3) cases of small pox; two (2) soldiers and one (1) laundress. After being in camp a few days another laundress was taken with the same disease, and also one man who was detailed as Nurse; Of the above mentioned cases, amounting to five (5) in all, at the date of discharge of the regiment, one man had died before the regiment

was finally disbanded and one has been reported to me as having died since. There were no deaths from Small pox on the voyage from Texas to City Point - One man died from fever on the ship, but he had been put on board, sick; however it was not small pox. The organization that is on its way to City Point is not from the same part of Texas. [[strikethrough]] one [[/strikethrough]] one was from Brazos Santiago and the other. from Ringold Barracks.

In regard to changing the place,- there is none other suitable, and as it has been designated by order of the Secretary of War as. the Rendezvous for troops mustered out, in Virginia,- I would suggest, that, if anything should be removed, it should be the Freedman's Bureau, as City Point is a Military reservation and held for military purposes.
