Whereas, a certain Communication having been seen in the public prints from the Superintendent of the Freedmen's Bureau of the County of Surry Va., derogatory to the character of our people & calculated from the source from which it emanates to produce a false impression on the Government and the public generally,- representing us as "cruel and unjust to the freedmen," factious and disloyal to the Government,- assertions which every man in the County of respectability knows to be false: And Whereas, our people having taken the oath of allegiance to the U. States Government, and as far as our knowledge and belief goes, have taken that oath in good faith; they have accepted the situation and are determined honestly and faithfully to abide by it,- satisfied as they are that their interest is in the Union and they have no desire to do any thing that may retard the reconstruction of that Union.

The people of Surry have always been uniformly and proverbially lenient and kind to the coloured race- both interest and humanity prompt such a course and they are perfectly satisfied that any other Course under the circumstances would be suicidal to their best interest.

Our relations with the Federal Authorites since they have been in our midst have, with some few exceptions, been uniformly amicable,- The present Superintendent never having had Cause to arrest any Citizen since he has been among us.

Therefore, Resolved, 1st That the remarks alluded to in the foregoing Communication, are new to any man in the County
