Surry Co. Va. March 26, 1866

To His Excellency F. H. Pierpoint

Dear Sir,

As you will see by the enclosed resolutions I am instructed to forward to you an Article in the Richmond Whig of the 23d inst. and also the proceedings of a meeting of the citizens of Surrey Co. in Consequence of such communication. few people feeling indignant at such an outrage, determined to hold a public meeting at the C.H. to give some expressions to their feelings in regard to the matter. A full meeting of the most respectable Citizens of the County was held_ Capt. T. W. Taylor was called to the chair & five Gentlemen [[strikethrough]] as [[/strikethrough]] A. C. Jones, Dr. M. Q. Holt, Col. J. S. Clarke, W. S. Underwood & W. H. Dillard were appointed to draw up resolutions &c professing the sence of the meeting - a copy of which I send you. I have no hesitancy in saying to you individually, that the Communication is almost entirely false. If the Bureau were to enjoin Temperance on its officers their duties might be better performed.

Very Respectfully
Wm H. Dillard

P.S. I have waylaid the article alluded to, but you can see it in "whig" of the 23 March Series, weekly.
