Office Chief Medical Officer State Va.
Richmond Va. May 7th 1866.

Doctor:-

I have the honor to inform you, that the Returns from the various Sub-Districts of the State in answer to the order for a report, of the number of Deaf & Dumb &c. of the State, come in very slowly, owing in part I suppose to the fact, that communication by mail with many of the counties of the state is irregular, and also to the fact that no census of these classes of persons was on record. I am urging the matter as rapidly as possible, and as soon as I can secure the proper data, shall not delay my response to the order a moment.

I am also happy to inform you that the diet table, established by you for the Hospitals of the Bureau is working in a very satisfactory manner. All the Hospitals are running the table and the resources seem sufficient to carry it out quite freely. I think the sick are well provided for now and comfortable in all respects. No epidemic disease is prevailing in the State. Urgent efforts are made everywhere to put Hospitals, Homes, and Asylums in the best possible sanitary condition, and to prevent overcrowding in Quarters, and promote cleanliness, personal and of Quarters. Great care is also being used throughout
