In reply to your enquiry in relation to the complaint of Frank Martin, son of Jim Gray - I beg leave respectfully to state - 

That I paid for the lot of land referred to, & the deed was made to me for it, & I always claimed & exercised ownership over it. From kind feelings to old Jim, I permitted him to build a cabin upon it & occupy it during his life, & I positively deny that after his death I drove off the old man's wife - or in any way interfered with her, in the possession. Out of respect for him, I would have not disturbed her, as long as she chose to remain. 

The timber for the cabin was cut from my land, & Jim had the privilege of cutting fuel for his own use, from other lands belonging to me, nearby. I never charged him rent for the land - I paid all the taxes from the time of making the purchase - paid his personal expenses & besides he was indebted to me, for a mare which he purchased of Mr Collins, & for
