Statement of Willieanna White (colored)
Residing on Broad St near Mayo

I was arrested in the month of August 1866 for creating a noise and disturbance on Franklin St near Governer, and sent to the City Jail, where I remained for two weeks.

I saw Mr Brooks strike Texana- a col'd girl who was arrested with me- on the top of her head, with a Policeman's "Billy" and cut a severe gash in her head, which nearly rendered her senseless at the time, the wound had not healed up at the expiration of the two weeks, when we both quit the jail; this assault was made because we were quarrelling among ourselves, by words only. I have very frequently seen Mr Brooks indulge in sexual connection with Becky Chandler (white) a prostitute, in a room publicly, before six or seven of us girls. (all col'd). Mr. Brooks would almost daily beat the Col'd women either with a Cowhide, his fist, or kick them with his boots, whichever was most convenient at the time, and for no apparent reason, and at times would encourage the girls to fight, that he might enjoy the satisfaction of cowhiding, or beating us all. Mr Hall was absent in the Country while I was confined in the jail.
