Dear Mr. Anlo:

Replying to your letter of 23rd inst., I regret exceedingly that I did not know your wishes earlier, as it would have given me no pleasure to have done whatever little I could for you, but the fact is when in New York some months ago this matter was under discussion, and a small party of gentlemen very much interested in the Paris Exposition entered into certain pledges between ourselves by which I am irreversibly bound.
Regretting I cannot be with you in this matter, I remain,
