Dec. 1/96.

Mrs. Tatau Yajima,
Gion Hachiken, Shinkomichi,
Kyoto, Japan.

My dear Mrs. Yajima:

I am very glad to receive your recent letter written in behalf of Tora and Ko. It is a great pleasure to hear from them and to know that they are both well and happy. They were extremely kind and faithful to me, and I have very pleasant recollections of the hundreds of miles traveled in their company.

I wish to make a little Christmas present to each of them and know no way to do it safely except through you. I have therefore taken the liberty of this day sending post office order for twenty five American dollars, equal to about fifty Japanese yen, to you. You post office in Kyoto will notify you of the arrival of the money and will pay over the same to you. After getting it, will you kindly divide it equally between Tora and Ko. It will give to each about twenty five yen. If you will attend to this work for me, I will be very thankful to you and consider it a great personal favor.

I trust you are very well, and wishing you the best of health and much good fortune, I am with kind regards,

Yours faithfully,
Charles L. Freer
