Aug. 18/98.

Dear Mansfield:

Your note of the 16th is received. I will send you a copy of that Whistler letter to-morrow. The matter had slipped my attention or it would have been sent long ago.

What a time you will have with Van Horne! I wish I could be with you, but it is impossible. I spent last Saturday and Sunday with Morse at Evanston. He has many extremely fine things. I will not attempt to enumerate them and urge you very strongly to stop and see them on your way west.

It seems quite probable that I shall be in New York some day next week, but I am not yet sure. If I go, I shall surely [[ask]] you to, but as I shall be very much rushed, I think we had better not count upon my stopping at your home.

Faithfully yours,

Charles L. Freer
