319 Union Trust Building, Detroit, Mich., Sept.22,1899. John W. Beatty, Esq. Director, C[[?]]] Art Gallery Pittsburgh, Penna. Replying to your favor of the 19th instant. It would afford me pleasure to loan you a Whistler for your forthcoming exhibition were it not for the fact that for such new ones as I have, I am pledged to the artist for an exhibition in New York to be held some time during the present autumn or coming winter, and as the date is uncertain I do not see my way clear of accommodating you in this direction. I will willingly loan you Mr. Dewing's painting entitled "At the Piano", if the artist will consent. I have written him on the subject and will advise you of his decision later. In the meantime, permit me to suggest that you drop him a line on the subject. His present address is T. W. Dewing, Windsor, Vermont. Your very truly, Charles L. Freer
