Detroit, Michigan,
October 13th, 1899.

Rev. Charles Mercer Hall,
Mission Church of the Holy Cross,
Kingston, N.Y.

My dear sir:-
Some three or four weeks ago I received a letter from you at a time in which I was deeply engaged with some pressing business matters. A day or two later I was called to Chicago and quickly after my return from that place I went to New York and New England and returned home only yesterday. In the meantime your letter was overlooked and I beg to apologize for the seeming neglect.

Answering your request to aid you in raising sufficient money to purchase a pipe organ for your church. I regret to say that I cannot see my way clear to do so. The numerous local calls of a similar character made upon me, together with an occasional outside call, which I cannot refuse, absorb and frequently exceed the amount I aim to appropriate annually to church work.

Furthermore, you will not misunderstand me I am sure, when I say to you that naturally I prefer to make my donations to such institutions as I am closely in touch with.

I have heard [[?]] [[?]] [[?]] church and the excellent work you are carrying on, through my relatives at Kingston and I fully appreciate the opportunities and responsibilities you have.

Regretting I cannot aid you as requested,
I remain,
Yours very respectfully,
Charles L Freer
