Mc.B.2.

the palace were destroyed and eventually the palace itself with its magnificent collection of paintings, pottery and bronzes, was destroyed by fire. However, the making of pottery still goes on in Kioto and in fact the greatest of living potters is a resident of that city. There has been no genuine Awata ware made since the destruction of the kilns but the old models and traditions have had a marked influence on the potter's art, and many workmen have been and still are engaged in making what is called the modern Awata ware. The clay used is rather close in texture and the finished articles made therefrom are light in weight. The predominating colors are white, gray, cream colored and buff, and some of even the later decorations are really very handsome. Should you wish any further information on this subject, I will be glad to send it to you at any time.

I am glad to know that Mr. McMillan is interested in and pleased because of the holiday gifts chosen this year, and if I have been of the slightest service in the matter to yourself and Mr.McMillan, I am of course delighted.

Give my compliments to Mr.McMillan, and with best wishes for a happy and prosperous year to you both, I remain,

Very truly yours,
Charles L Freer
