My dear Mr. Bixsby:-
The Evans sale proved exceedingly interesting, and I regret that you could not have been in New York at the time and have attended the same with me. I went all three evenings and watched the event closely. Many surprises occurred, and it would have surprised you to have seen the discrimination between the good and bad works of art, that is, the ordinary examples, even by the great painters, fetched, with a few exception, very low prices, showing, as a rule, that no one wanted mediocre pleasures. On the other hand, good examples by the best brought, as a rule, full value, and in many instances sold extremely high.

In several instances, I bid on important pictures for you, but in the and succeeded in getting one only, namely: the beautiful landscape by George Fuller, "Bringing Home the Cow", #174 of catalogue which I secured at the very low price of $1550.00. It is a large canvas, being 30" high and 50" long, and it is considered to the one of Mr. Fuller's very finest landscapes. I could
