Norfolk Dec 12th 1865

Sir
We the undersign Loyall Citizens of the City of Norfolk, understand that a petition is being circulated among our colored population for the removal of Mr Chas Johnson, President of the Freedmans Court of this city, and for fear that false statements may be made against Mr Johnson. We beg leave to bear our testimony in his behalf, that in him we recognise every principal of a Gentleman and entitled to the confidence of the Government.

Believeing this move to eminate from designing men, who have no other motive in view than to advance their own interest, and use the Colored population to effect this purpose.

We have deemed it proper to make this statement. Hopeing it may be your pleasure
