January 30th 1866

I Left Richmond on Saturday Dec 23rd 1865 and went to Surry County Virginia to Visit my family at Cabin point and while I was there Saveral days and Conducting My Self as well I can, and under Plea of Drunkness I was attacked unjustily By a Confederate name Charles Higgin a Residents of [[strikethrough]]the[[/strikethrough]] Said County and he drew his pistol and Struck me on the head with the Butt of the pistol and struck with a large Stick and Injured me Saverely and the cause of it was prejudice against the Colored people. Liberty and I Would have Apply to the Provost Marshall the office is 15 miles from Cabin points and But the [[torn paper edge]] Inhabitants would have mob me if I had took Redress and I write you this Statement show you how [[the]] [[torn paper edge] Colored people are getting on in the Country.
