subject & to ask that a provision be made for them.  I have maintained them ever since the 3d April 1865, at a heavy expense, which has placed my affairs in a state of much embarrassment.  They are now occupying homes on my land that I have need of.  I have done all in my power to prevent their suffering, but my own interest ought not to be disregarded.
  
The counties of Caroline & Hanover, ravaged by the war, & my own estates particularly so, are in no condition to raise money for the support of the freedmen.  The taxes they have imposed are laid, I understand exclusively on the land

I will call on you shortly, & can then furnish any explanations that may be required.  In the meantime I must ask the favor of you to acknowledge the receipt of this letter.
