Capt James A. Bates

Captain
I have the honor to enclose for your consideration a copy from the records of the County Court of my Sub. District.
I turned over to a Justice of the Peace an aggravated case of assault,— a white man having thrust a pitchfork in a negro, and there being no civil officer present I had the fellow arrested, by request of the Justice— the magistrate had the prisoner properly bound over to appear at Court, a copy of the order, Circular 10 being forwarded to the Court as explanatory of my declension to act in the cast.
The sureties of the man are exempted from further liability and the case dismissed—
Am I to take any further action in this case or similar ones.

Very respectfully
Your obt servt.
