The Sheriff of Hampton and Elizabeth City County informed me recently, that he had not seen a drunken freedman for months, and that he had very little trouble with them on account of liquor.  The Medical Officers of the Bureau at this place say, in effect, the same, and express surprise at the prevailing temperance. 
 
The same is true of York County and Yorktown. All this in spite of abundant opportunities for procuring intoxicating drinks.  

It is yet true, that liquor-shops are a curse to this section, and that they are rendezvous for lazy freedmen, and that much money is squandered in them. 

 
With regard to the other Divisions of this Sub District, I have nothing to report, but beg leave to refer to my communication of May 27, as confirming all the information as
