Chesterfield, March 22nd/67. Gen. Brown, Dear Sir: The circumstances which prompt me to write, are peculiarly distressing — Martha Coleman, a coloured woman, is actually starving, she & her poor little boy are days without a mouthful to eat. Coming events are casting their shadows, which physically disable her for service, and render her [[strikethrough]] for [[/strikethrough]] more worthy of attention & consideration God only know what will become of her — She has a part of a room with a woman, who has threatened to turn her out. I wish it were in my power to assist her, I would readily do so. Could you not place her in a [[strikethrough]] hop [[/strikethrough]] hospital until she is well? — I live on [[strikethrough]] on [[/strikethrough]] the Midlothian coal-pits turnpike, two miles from Manchester, right on the road at Mrs Hobs' place. I can direct the driver to Martha's residence. Very respectfully, Eliza J. Darden. P.S. A ration-ticket, would do her no good, as she has no-one to act — Her husband has left her & without cause [[left margin]] She is not able to walk to town. I told her, perhaps you would send for her [[/left margin]]
