Gen'l Schofield, 

I am induced by y'r kind reception of me, to obey y'r injunction, viz and that I should write to you & give you my antecedents. I have consequently been pondering in my mind as to how far back it will be necessary for me to go, whether I shall revert to the days of my childhood or merely refer to what has occurred since the late unfortunate war, perhaps it would be as well to inform you that my parents emigrated from this State to Natchez, Miss, when I was very young, so young that I have no recollection of it, they had only been there a year or
