Sir:
I respectfully request that transportation may be given to a very respectable and worthy old blackman - named James Cray - to his home and family in Columbia, S. Carolina - to which he is extremely desirous of going. Up to this time, this old man has been enabled to support himself very well; but he has not been able to save enough from his earnings to pay the transportation to his home: hence this application. I will undertake to promise that he will not be any expense to the UStates after reaching his family. -

I am, very respectfully,
Your Ob't Serv't,
James F. Harrison, M.D.
